La Trobe Hospital Eye Surgery Fit-out

Client: La Trobe Hospital

Location: La Trobe Valley, VIC

Project Type: Specialist Eye Surgery Fitout

Project Value: $11.5m

Project Duration: June 2017 – Nov 2017

Strategic Objective

La Trobe Hospital serves more than 100,000 patients annually and is recognised for its commitment to clinical excellence and innovation. Senior hospital leaders identified the need to modernise the existing eye surgery facilities to support improved surgical outcomes, faster recovery times, and the integration of advanced medical technologies.

The objective was to deliver a contemporary, future‑ready surgical environment that would enhance clinician capability, improve patient experience, and align with evolving healthcare standards—without compromising ongoing hospital operations.

The Challenge / Need

The existing eye surgery unit had reached the end of its functional life and required full decommissioning. Its layout, services, and infrastructure were no longer suitable for modern surgical techniques or advanced technology integration.

The hospital faced the challenge of upgrading a critical clinical function within a live healthcare environment, where downtime, compliance risk, and disruption to patient care carried significant operational and reputational consequences. Achieving alignment between clinical expectations, technical requirements, and delivery constraints was essential.

Project Scope

The project involved the complete transformation of the eye surgery unit, including:

  • Decommissioning of existing surgical and recovery spaces
  • Full fitout of a state‑of‑the‑art eye surgery suite
  • Integration of advanced surgical technologies and technical systems
  • Creation of modern, ergonomic recovery areas to support patient comfort and staff efficiency

All works were required to comply with stringent healthcare regulations and sterile environment standards.

Our Approach

The project was guided through a structured, outcomes‑focused delivery approach designed to provide clarity and confidence to hospital leadership throughout the project lifecycle.

Key elements included:

  • A holistic needs assessment undertaken with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders
  • Development of a detailed execution plan prioritising safety, compliance, and minimal disruption
  • Active management of procurement, installation, and commissioning of specialised surgical technologies
  • Continuous oversight to ensure health, safety, and regulatory requirements were met at every stage

The focus was on simplifying complexity—enabling informed, defensible decisions while maintaining momentum in a highly regulated environment.

Risks and Challenges

Critical risks requiring deliberate management included:

  • Minimising disruption to ongoing hospital operations during construction and fit‑out
  • Maintaining sterile conditions and compliance with healthcare regulations
  • Coordinating multiple specialist suppliers and installers within tight program constraints
  • Aligning diverse stakeholder requirements with budget and timeline expectations

These risks were addressed through early planning, disciplined governance, and clear communication, ensuring issues were resolved proactively rather than escalated late.

Solution & Key Deliverables

The completed works delivered:

  • Safe and compliant decommissioning of outdated surgical facilities
  • A fully integrated, state‑of‑the‑art eye surgery unit equipped with advanced medical technologies
  • Ergonomically designed recovery areas supporting patient comfort and efficient clinical workflows
  • Technical systems aligned with broader hospital operational and infrastructure requirements

The fitout was delivered in line with agreed scope and performance expectations, supporting seamless transition into clinical use.

Outcome

The project resulted in a modernised surgical environment that supports improved clinical performance, enhanced patient recovery, and future‑focused healthcare delivery.

Hospital leadership achieved a clear, defensible capital outcome—one that balances clinical ambition with operational reality—while reinforcing La Trobe Hospital’s reputation for innovation, quality, and patient‑centred care.
