The Challenge / Need

In 2000, a client approached us after experiencing a significant business continuity issue. Their essential financial records could not be recovered because both the primary data and backup disks had become corrupted.

At the same time, internet adoption among Australian businesses was accelerating. Many organisations were connecting to the internet through dial-up services and beginning to recognise the importance of digital business systems. However, affordable and reliable online backup solutions were virtually non-existent in the market.

The client asked whether we could develop a secure online backup platform that would eliminate dependence on physical media and provide confidence that critical business data could always be recovered.

Our Approach

Recognising an emerging market need, we designed and developed a fully managed online backup platform called SafeAs.

The solution was engineered using Microsoft’s .NET development framework and designed to operate efficiently over the internet connections available at the time, including dial-up services commonly used by small businesses.

Our objective was to create a simple, reliable, and automated service that required minimal user intervention while ensuring business-critical information remained protected at all times.

To ensure enterprise-grade availability and security, the platform was hosted within a Tier 4 data centre operated by Macquarie Telecom.

Risks and Challenges

Several challenges existed during the project:

  • Customer concerns regarding security and reliability of off-site data storage.
  • Developing efficient data transfer mechanisms capable of operating over low-speed connections.
  • Ensuring backup and restoration processes remained simple for non-technical business users.
