Christmas 2024 – Letter of Thankfulness

To my dear Customers, Mentors, and Friends,

As the festive season unfolds, I am filled with immense gratitude and warmth when I think of the incredible journey we’ve embarked upon together this past year.

This year, I find myself reflecting on both the shared challenges and the unique opportunities that define our time. Last year, I wrote to you with a message of optimism, underscored by a sense of progress and collective resilience. This year, whilst these things remain, this year it has become ever more evident of the needs across our communities, we see more people doing it tougher than they have in years past. Rising discontentment, strained relationships, rising costs, uncertain economic conditions, and global shifts weigh heavily on many families, creating a Christmas season that may feel less joyful for some.

In light of these challenges, more so this year, I am reflecting on generosity, care, and thoughtful decision-making—qualities that can transform not only individual lives but also the trajectory of our community. As we celebrate the season, let us focus on these values to bring light and hope to a world that greatly needs them.

Generosity

Generosity is often viewed as a one-time act—a charitable donation during the holidays or volunteering for a single event. While these contributions are undoubtedly valuable, the true power of generosity lies in its regularity. Consistent giving—whether it’s financial support, your time, or your expertise—creates a foundation for sustained impact.

The act of giving regularly fosters trust and reliability. When organizations and individuals can depend on consistent support, they can plan, grow, and create meaningful change. Consider, for instance, supporting a local charity on a monthly basis. This simple commitment can help fund educational programs, sustain food banks, or provide critical medical services to those in need. The ripple effects of regular giving extend far beyond the immediate contribution.

Moreover, regular giving is a powerful way to build a legacy of generosity within your own family. Children learn values through observation. By involving them in decisions about where and how to give, you instill in them a sense of responsibility and compassion. These are lessons that endure and shape their character for a lifetime.

This Christmas, I am, and encourage you to think beyond the immediate season and ask yourself: How can I connect and serve others, in what way? How can I create a habit of generosity that continues into the new year and beyond? The answer to these questions has the potential to change lives—including your own.

Extending Care and Generosity to Those Struggling

While financial contributions are important, generosity of spirit and action can often mean even more to those facing difficulties. Many in our communities are navigating complex challenges—job insecurity, mental health struggles, or the loneliness that so often accompanies hardship. These are burdens that money alone cannot solve.

Caring for those who are struggling begins with awareness. How often do we take the time to truly see the people around us? The colleague who seems unusually quiet, the neighbor who has stopped participating in community activities, the friend who hesitates to reach out—these small signals can reveal a great deal. Taking the time to ask, “How are you really doing?” or offering a listening ear can be profoundly impactful.

Generosity also involves creating space for empathy. It means resisting the urge to judge others for their circumstances and instead asking how we can help. For some, this may involve acts of kindness—delivering a meal, offering childcare, or assisting with a job search. For others, it might mean connecting them with resources or simply reminding them that they are not alone.

In a broader sense, extending care requires us to advocate for systemic change. Supporting initiatives that provide housing, mental health services, and community development programs can address the root causes of struggle, rather than just the symptoms. Each of us has the ability to be part of a collective movement toward a more compassionate society. This Christmas, I am committing to being more than my ‘busy-ness’ this year, I am turning more of my focus to connecting and edificiation and lifting each other up.
