{"id":5914,"date":"2025-08-31T15:31:01","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T05:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/murrayslatter.me\/?p=5914"},"modified":"2025-08-31T15:31:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T05:31:04","slug":"what-i-am-investing-in-and-why-google-alphabet-inc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/murrayslatter.me\/?p=5914","title":{"rendered":"What I Am Investing In and Why: Google (Alphabet Inc.)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Owning the Oil Fields of the Internet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I made my first investment in Google back in 2015\u2014not because I was a tech evangelist, but because I\u2019d come to deeply understand how powerful search really was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The genius of Google wasn\u2019t just that it ranked web pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was that it turned attention\u2014the scarcest commodity in the digital economy\u2014into a bidding war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you wanted top billing on a search results page, you paid for it. If you didn\u2019t pay, you didn\u2019t show up. And if you didn\u2019t show up, you didn\u2019t win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scarcity of position on the world\u2019s most used interface became the most valuable real estate in advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That one insight became the cornerstone of Google\u2019s advertising empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keywords as a Scarcity Engine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What struck me at the time was that keywords were a monetized auction on human intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People type exactly what they want into a search bar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google surfaces the most relevant results and ads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advertisers bid more and more to win those clicks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a pure-margin engine\u2014and one that compounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Amazon does with purchase data, Google does one step earlier: it monetizes desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And unlike most businesses that face commoditization over time, Google\u2019s search ad business has gotten stronger with scale. More users, more data, better relevance, higher bids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the perfect feedback loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alphabet\u2019s \u2018Other Bets\u2019 Weren\u2019t Distractions\u2014They Were Foresight<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I matured in my investing, I looked further under the hood\u2014particularly at Google\u2019s so-called \u201cOther Bets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when I realized: this wasn\u2019t just an advertising company. This was a moonshot factory backed by the world\u2019s best data science engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They knew AI was coming long before it was trendy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They were acquiring and integrating data from YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, and more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They had the compute (TPUs), the frameworks (TensorFlow), and the infrastructure (Cloud\/Azure hybrid).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric Schmidt, Sergey Brin, and Larry Page were building a foundational empire for the data age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What others called \u201cOther Bets,\u201d I came to see as venture-style R&amp;D with asymmetric potential:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Waymo for autonomous driving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DeepMind for foundational AI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verily and Calico for health tech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google X for next-gen hardware<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of these will work. But they don\u2019t need to. Google Search alone funds an innovation portfolio that rivals entire VC funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Data as the New Oil\u2014And Google Owns the Fields<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point over the past decade, the analogy became clear to me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data is the new oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not all data is equal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What matters is contextualized, indexed, relevant data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And no one has more of it than Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Billions of searches per day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Billions of hours of video watched<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Billions of emails, docs, messages, and maps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All indexed. All retrievable. All trainable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When AI began its explosive breakout in 2022\u20132025, Google already had the fuel\u2014and the refinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the company is arming itself for the next battles: foundational models, quantum compute, and ambient computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Still Bullish, Ten Years On<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I hold Google in my G1 Fund (Core Compounders)\u2014a long-term, high-confidence investment I rarely touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The business is still growing. It\u2019s still scaling. And it\u2019s still protected by one of the strongest moats on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, I believe we\u2019re only in Act II of Google\u2019s journey. If Act I was the internet, Act II is AI. And Act III will be ambient intelligence that surrounds our lives invisibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you snap your fingers and try to imagine a world without Google, everything stops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Email<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calendars<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Video<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Android<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It fails the \u201cSnap Test\u201d\u2014and that\u2019s exactly why I continue to own it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Owning the Oil Fields of the Internet I made my first investment in Google back in 2015\u2014not because I was a tech evangelist, but because I\u2019d come to deeply understand how powerful search really was.
