Safe, reliable access to its arch and lateral steel members is essential to maintaining structural integrity, public safety, and long\u2011term asset performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NSW Roads &amp; Maritime Services required a <strong>clear, defensible business and engineering pathway<\/strong> for the future of the four existing <strong>Arch Maintenance Units (AMUs)<\/strong>. Rather than defaulting to full replacement, RMS sought an evidence\u2011based assessment to determine whether refurbishment and code compliance upgrades could safely extend the service life of these critical access systems\u2014while respecting the bridge\u2019s heritage significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenge \/ Need <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four AMUs were approaching end of life and no longer clearly compliant with evolving safety and design standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key challenges included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Determining whether the existing AMUs complied with <strong>AS 1170.1<\/strong> and the recently amended <strong>AS 1418<\/strong> standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessing complex <strong>structural, mechanical, electrical, and control systems<\/strong> operating in a live, high\u2011risk environment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintaining safe and efficient maintenance access to the full bridge arch throughout the works<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimising disruption to bridge operations and maintenance programs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring that any upgrades did <strong>not compromise the visual or heritage integrity<\/strong> of the Sydney Harbour Bridge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decision to replace, refurbish, or retire the AMUs carried significant safety, cost, operational, and reputational consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Scope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayer International was engaged to undertake <strong>full assessment, design, and delivery<\/strong> of the refurbishment program, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Structural, mechanical, electrical, and control systems integrity assessments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety\u2011in\u2011compliance review against AS 1170.1, AS 1418, and associated standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business\u2011case level evaluation of refurbishment versus replacement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design upgrades to bring the AMUs into compliance with current codes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Removal of each AMU from service, refurbishment off\u2011site, and staged re\u2011installation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constructability and risk planning to support safe execution in a constrained, iconic environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A structured, evidence\u2011led approach was adopted\u2014balancing engineering rigour, safety governance, constructability, and heritage sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key elements included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Comprehensive Integrity Assessment:<\/strong> Detailed review of structural, mechanical, electrical, and control systems to establish a validated base case<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safety &amp;
